So in this week’s These things to be true, The Jon said The Jon would try to write everyday since this is now TheBaseballStar.com. So here we go and stuff. First up to bat is Adam Dunn, the most oxymoronic fantasy player of all time. He is the antithesis of the type of player The Jon drafts. Hitting in the .240s while being a league leader in homers with 32, he is everything The Greatness hates about risk/reward players. H2H league success is dependent on reliability, and Adam Dunn is not it.
Still, if you have the right team, Dunn could just very well be your team’s MVP. Confused? Well, let’s go down memory lane … as if you had a choice.
The Jon drafted Adam Dunn high one season thinking the power categories were all locked up. One caveat: The Jon did not have the right team for an Adam Dunn.
This is what you need:
- One high average power hitters aka Albert Pujols, Chase Utley, Lance Berkman, Purple Lips.
- Two midrange average power hitters aka Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, Ryan Braun, Josh Hamilton.
- High average hit guys with opportune pop aka Russell Martin, Magglio Ordonez, Shane Victorino, Adrian Gonzalez.
Then and only then is Dunn valuable. He is pretty much having the cake and eating it too (Oooooh a PoiDog cliché).
With the three prerequisites above, you can weather the storm and deal with his five hits a week when he is cold or his 9 hit, 4 homer 10 RBI performances when he is hot. Without meeting the requirements, your offense was screwed, just like a couple of seasons ago for The Jon.
Adam Dunn is not a player to build around. He is gravy. No more, no less.
So why Adam Dunn in this first installment.
Well, The Jon has followed the three rules … Thaaaannnks.
